 About Amy Melious

Amy Melious by Judy Chance Hope

I fell in love with photography very early in my life. I was attracted to the medium as a blend of art and science, a means of both observation and expression. I felt a strong sense that photography would be an important part of my life for a long time. That has proved to be true.

Looking back on my work now, after two decades, I can see that my pictures collectively form a sort of visual diary of my life, like a trail of crumbs representing trace glimpses of places I've been, people I've met, or wonders of nature I’ve admired. All the while, there exists the excitement and mystery of what’s to come.

I spend much of my personal and professional energy working with flowers, landscapes, still life and the human spirit. Each image is a process I very much enjoy. When I work with a camera, I begin at first as a witness, next I become a participant, then craftsperson. In the end, I feel I have learned, celebrated, and given back.

I look at photography as a livelihood. It’s not only my chosen means of support, but a way of life as well. I feel there is wisdom in nature, kindness in beauty, and growth in discovery.

To see a world in a grain of sand,
and heaven in a wildflower,
hold infinity in the palm of your hand
and eternity in an hour.

                                - William Blake
